What is Low Density EVA foam?

Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate, which is what EVA is an abbreviation for, is more commonly known as expanded rubber of foam rubber. It is a great shock absorber and often found in sports equipment, such as helmets, pads, and boots. In the creative industry, EVA foam is a valuable material for crafting impressive props and armor sets. Depending on the hardness or sturdiness your project requires, we have Low Density EVA foam and High Density EVA foam for you on offer. There are three types of Low Density EVA foam for you to choose from:

  • The CF65 is the most agile of the foams, making a smart choice if you want to work with round shapes.
  • The CF100 is sturdier than the CF65 and gives a much smoother result after dremeling.
  • The CF200 is the sturdiest of the bunch. It is exceptionally durable, holds its shape extremely well and allows for an even smoother finish.

How to use:

You choose the thickness of your foam based on the costume or prop you wish to make. If you plan on fighting Thanos as Tony Stark’s Iron Man, a thicker foam would be a viable choice. For nature-inspired wood elf gear, a thinner Low Density EVA foam might be a better option. Our 10 millimeter thick foam is also perfect to strengthen parts of your build. Check out this list of EVA Foam properties:

  • Glueable with contact glue or hotglue. This allows you build a thicker layer of foam by stapling layers on top of each other.
  • Manipulable into various shapes using a heat gun.
  • Easily cuttable with a utility knife. With a little practice you can even cut beveled edges.

Patterns can be added to all our foams. Wood burning tools are great for this. If you wish to learn more about working with Low Density EVA Foam, we highly recommend Kamui Cosplay’s EVA Foam tutorial books or joining one of our fun yet educational workshops.

Painting EVA Foam

Once you have finished working on your Low Density EVA foam cosplay armor piece or prop, you probably cannot wait to give it a lick of paint. Before painting, make sure you seal and prime the foam. By using a heat-sealing technique, or by directly priming using our Flexbond, Hexflex or QuickSpray Primers, your creation will not be damaged during the painting process. After heat sealing, any of our primers can be used. Once primed, your creation is ready be brought to life with color.
